Michael is a Chartered and European Patent Attorney with nearly twenty years’ experience in roles in private practice for small and large clients and as in-house counsel for a multinational corporation.
Michael comes from a technical background in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences, having an honours degree in Chemistry from Edinburgh University and a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Nottingham, under the guidance of Professor Malcolm Stevens. He has worked in private practice in London with a diverse range of clients in fields of catalysts, separation technologies, pharmaceutical formulations and medical devices. He then acted as in-house Counsel for Kodak Ltd including drafting and global prosecution for UK originating inventions and European patent attorney for Eastman Kodak Company primarily in inkjet media and inks. Michael has been in private practice again since 2006 and works largely with start-ups and high growth companies advising on protecting their valuable IP assets.
Michael’s recent patent attorney work has included chemistry and materials, cleantech, medical and life sciences and engineering technologies, advising on patentablity, developing an effective IP strategy and freedom to operate issues.
Michael is passionate about entrepreneurship and enterprise and enjoys helping clients grow and create value. He contributes time to entrepreneurial organisations to provide guidance and mentorship in IP-related matters. Michael is also on the European Qualifying Examinations committee for patent attorneys for the legal paper. Michael is also involved with CIPA, the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys, as a member of the International Liaison Committee.
