Board members are instrumental in the scaling of any business. They should understand the key drivers of the business and recognize the value in the business, and ensure that the business is prepared for an exit – even if, for the founders, that time is far in the distance. To fail to prepare is to prepare to fail. Boards should help drive the strategy of the business and support the leadership in the firm – but it should always be a collaborative process and like many partnerships, sometimes things just don’t work out as anticipated.
